Tough Travelling“Tough Traveling” is a weekly Thursday feature created by Nathan at Review Barn where participants make a new list each week based on The Tough Guide to Fantasyland by Diana Wynne Jones. This hilarious little book cheerfully pokes fun at the most prevalent tropes in fantasy. All are welcome to take part, and there is a link up over at his site. Join in any time!

This week’s topic is FLYING RIDES:

Because honestly?  Horses just got boring.  (Thanks to author Anne Leonard for the suggestion).

I’m very curious to see what people have on their lists this week; I’ll be shocked if dragons aren’t the number one choice. On to the list!

His Majesty's DragonTemeraire – His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik

Could riding a dragon ever be boring? I don’t think so, but Temeraire’s curious nature and love of books makes for an even more interesting ride than usual. One of the things that I liked best about Novik’s version of dragons is their ability to communicate verbally. Talking things out really is the easiest way to deal with conflict sometimes.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of AzkabanBuckbeak – Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

While Buckbeak may not be a major character – or even a steady flying partner – he does help Harry & co. several times. Harry even comes to ‘own’ Buckbeak later in the series, and the hippogriff shows himself to be very loyal. I have to hand it to Rowling, she does an excellent job of incorporating animals in a meaningful way.

The Magician's Nephew by C.S. LewisFledge – The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

That’s right people, I got a Pegasus on my list! While Fledge started his life as a regular old cart horse, Aslan gives him wings and makes him one of the first talking beasts of Narnia. Fledge ends up helping Digory and Polly on their quest in THE MAGICIAN’S NEPHEW, flying them to the far reaches of Narnia in search of the silver apple tree.

07_neverending_story_blu-rayFalkor – The NeverEnding Story

While I’ve never read the book, I completely fell in love with the movie adaptation of The Neverending Story when I was a kid. My favourite part of the story was Falkor, the luckdragon  who aids both Bastian and Atreyu. In the film, Falkor has a snakelike body with a vaguely canine head – and can somehow fly without wings. Although luckdragons are not particularly strong, they are lucky in everything they do…which comes in handy a few times!

I totally forgot about Falkor. Great call with him. And every list has to have dragons, right?

I really wish I’d participated this week, this was a cool topic! So glad you mentioned Harry Potter and Buckbeak:-)

  1. Great pick with Falkor! I loved The Neverending Story when I was a kid, too.

I really wanted to add Falkor but I haven’t read the book so didn’t know if that would be cheating. Obviously I’ve seen the film but I wasn’t sure. And, of course, I’d soon as I’d posted I thought of the Weasley’s car!

There is a great deal of love for Temeraire this week, and it’s more than deserved!

  2. Buckbeak! 🙂 He has 6 limbs. That’s so weird. (Also applies to centaurs.)

I keep hearing so many good things about Novik’s series but I’m afraid to start it because it’s SO LONG. How many have you read?

I read The Neverending Story when I was a kid and remember only a little, mostly a feeling that comes close to what I imagine an acid trip would be like. I’m sure it’s a completely wonky memory but I really need to get back to this one. Perhaps I’ll wait a decade and read it to Kiddo 🙂

I thought of Falkor (never would have remember the name) after creating my list 🙂 I’ve also never read the book. Great list!

  3. Before I decided to go with inanimate flying things, Strawberry the cabbie horse was totally on my list but I couldn’t remember his new and improved name after getting wings! Also Falkor is awesome and I haven’t watched The Neverending Story in AGES. It must be time for a re-watch. I did recently start listening to the book but for whatever the reason I’m not in the mood for it at the moment – someday soon though!

  4. LOL confession: I only watched The Neverending Move for the first time earlier this month. Achievement unlocked 😀

    1. The Neverending Story movie*

  5. I’ve also never read Neverending Story. So many books, so little time. High five for including Temeraire!

  6. Awesome choices on your list, I probably would have come up with Buckbeak and then run out of choices. Actually, no the Eagles from Lord of the Rings, they count right?

And The Neverending Story, I used to love that film too as a kid, but thinking back I don’t think I have a clue what happens in it. I may need to rewatch because I remember Falkor, some evil thing and that’s about it. And wasn’t there some magical looking girl? Wow, my memory is bad.
